Does an ideal diet even exist?

This is the question we will be attempting to answer this coming weekend at a very special wellness seminar entitled ‘What is the ideal diet?’

I’ve been asked to sit in the paleo corner, joining a vegan, vegetarian, wholefood nutritionist and the founder of a wholefoods food chain.

It should be an interesting debate, which I’m hopeful it ends in some sort of mutual agreement or agree to disagree scenario!

But seriously, it’s a difficult question to answer and it really depends on what people consider ‘ideal’. Ideal to some could be a diet designed to maximise physical strength or endurance. It could be to fight ill health, or it could just be a diet that is realistic and therefore easy to maintain.

My ideal isn’t your ideal.

The best way I have heard the ideal diet described is the ‘you diet’ – a diet which is designed around your specific needs, beliefs and attitude towards food. It makes sense, but this assumes that every person has been through a process of self discovery and information gathering to determine what works best for them.

This is not a realistic assumption. For a lot of people, they rely on the information available to them.

Which begs the question, if we had to all subscribe to the same diet, what would it be? What if we all had to eat the same? If we didn’t have choice and access to a wide variety of food sources. If we all had to agree to one approach – what would we consider ideal and suitable for all?

For those interested in following this debate, if you are in Sydney this coming Sunday come along to the event and hear first hand as we talk it out. For those not in Sydney, the event will be filmed so don’t despair! I’ll provide a link post event.
